Overview:
- The Department of Pediatrics, Gandhi Medical College Bhopal, has been running the MD Pediatrics course since 1970.
- The department started with 5 MD seats, and since then, it has increased the number of MD seats to 25 postgraduate students per year in the year 2023.
- The average daily OPD patient load of the department is 200-240. The total OPDs (from July 24 to June 25) - 76065 out of which neonatal follow-ups were about 11105.
- Total admissions in the last year were 13863 including 5594 newborn admissions.
- The department caters to all the nearby districts of Bhopal along with out-of-district referrals.
Infrastructure:
- The Department of Pediatrics has a bed strength of 200 beds.
- We have 30-bed SNCU with 22 ventilators, 14 Machine CPAPs, 21 phototherapy units, 6 T-piece resuscitators, USG and ECHO machine and defibrillator .
- The department also has a 15-bed PICU, and 10-bed HDU with tertiary level care.
- There are 4 wards of 30 beds each accounting for 120 beds.
- The department has started the first 20-bed Maternal Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (MNCU).The. unit provides care to mother and neonate dyad with facilities of radiant warmers ,CPAP machines, phototherapy units
- There is a separate Thalassemia day care ward.
- The department has established the Regional Early Intervention Centre catering to provide specialized support and services including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, hearing screening, and speech therapy.
- Comprehensive lactational Management Center is soon to be started.
- First State Newborn and Pediatric Resource center is established with collaboration of NHM
- We are regularly conducting training and workshops on FBNC, IMPACT, IMNCI, F-SAM, NRP, KMC, Non inasive ventilation etc.
Every year, we train three batches of doctors and nurses from district hospitals sent by the NHM.
Faculty profile:
- The department has 19 full-time devoted faculty members, 5 senior residents, and 66 postgraduate residents.
- The department provides ambulatory OPD, 24-hour emergency, and inpatient care including dedicated pediatric and neonatal intensive care units.
- The department runs specialty clinics such as pediatric neurology, hematology, asthma, nephrology, endocrinology, cardiology, and neurodevelopment clinics daily.
- More than 60 thesis projects are undergoing in the department. Meaningful scientific research is a key goal of the department’s academics in synchrony with the Institute’s mandate.
- The department is committed to uplifting the status of medical education of undergraduates and postgraduates using newer teaching methodologies so that the knowledge and skills acquired during their training period can be disseminated to the rest of the country.

- Pneumonia Research and Vaccine Impact League (PREVAIL) - JHU-USA and MAMC New Delhi – 2020 - 2023
- Mandar Project: The department accomplished the herculean task of the Hindi translation of a standard pediatric textbook in a record time of 6 months – 2022
- Indian Network for Streptococcus pneumoniae and PCV Impact Research – India (INSPIRE).
- Incidence of Novel Coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in neonates admitted to a tertiary care center in central India.
- Baseline Assessment of Streptococcus pneumoniae India Serotype (BASIS) - Multicentric Study, in collaboration with John Hopkins University, USA.
- Pilot project for incorporation of IMNCI in pre-service training way back in 2002 under the mentorship of Late Dr M.K. Bhan.
- ICMR research project on Thyroid profile of newborns of gas-affected mothers in comparison with non-affected mothers.
- Point of Care Quality Improvement – Improving the quality of neonatal care by reducing blindness due to ROP - Multicentric Study, in collaboration with PGIMER Chandigarh.
- Identification and Validation of circulating microRNAs as a novel biomarker for Neonatal Septicemia - Multicentric Study in collaboration with AIIMS Bhopal.
- A study of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Psychosocial functioning of children and the level of stress in their caregivers.
Ongoing Research Projects:
- DRP Project- Implementation of standard treatment workflows for pediatrics to improve adherence to the guidelines in the setting of a district hospital under the district residency program of NMC 2021 – ICMR-funded multicentric study
- AEFI Project- Project for reporting of adverse events following immunization, under MOHFW and NHM.
- A multicentric study to promote antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship in the management of UTI: an experiment in mentorship to expand the one health concept.
- GMC Bhopal is part of Several Multicentric Projects in Collaboration with AIIMS Bhopal
- Project on Newborn screening for Diseases like CAH, congenital hypothyroidism, Galactosemia, and Haemoglobinopathies.
- Screening of Rickettsial diseases in children.
- Project looking into the reproductive causes associated with early stillbirths and early infant mortality in Madhya Pradesh.
- The department is conducting IHAT (Indian Health Action Trust) visits in 12 districts of the Bhopal division to improve the healthcare quality.
- NHM funded project ,Outcome of preterm neonates with RDS managed with early surfactant therapy through LISA.
