The Department of Psychiatry, Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, was established in the year 2000 under the guidance of Dr. Ashok Bhiman, who served as the first Head of the Department.
Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. R. N. Sahu, who headed the department from 2003 to 2019, the department witnessed significant growth. During his tenure, inpatient (IPD) and ECT services were initiated, and numerous programs were conducted for the welfare and development of the department.
At present, the department is led by Dr. J. P. Agrawal. It offers a comprehensive range of psychiatric services, including Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) care, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, De-addiction Treatment, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Biofeedback Therapy.
The department is also equipped with various investigative and diagnostic facilities to aid in holistic patient care.
In addition to clinical services, the department plays an active academic role by training undergraduate medical students, psychology students, and nursing students. In 2024, a dedicated Child Mental Health Clinic was established under the guidance of Dr. Samiksha Sahu.
